ATHENS (dpa-AFX) – The European Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas has warned of significant burdens on air traffic in view of the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. “The situation is not good,” he told the Greek news channel Skai.
Sufficient fuel is currently available and more than 80 percent of airports are not reporting any bottlenecks. However, prices have more than doubled. This led to numerous airlines discontinuing connections that were already hardly economically viable before the war. However, if the closure continues and no solution is found, shortages could also occur after June.
Emergency reserves as insurance
A real shortage in Europe is not expected for the time being, emphasized Tzitzikostas and referred to existing emergency reserves. The EU states have been obliged to report their stocks daily in order to keep an overview of the available reserves. If shortages become apparent after June, these stocks could be released in a targeted manner, he added./tt/DP/he
