Something strange seems to be going on at the Molenveld near Exloo. The heathland looks normal enough when you walk across it. But if you take to the air, for example with a drone, you will suddenly notice that strange patterns crisscross the nature reserve.

At Find Out! a question came in from a drone operator who wondered what those strange lines are. Some kind of crop circles, made by aliens? Hallways dug by a giant snake? Or is there another, more mundane explanation?

First let’s see what kind of area it actually is. The Molenveld near Exloo is part of the Hondsrug, and a unique nature reserve with heathland and wet areas. It is a bit of a rolling landscape, and the Exloo sheep herd can be found there almost every day.

In addition to the beautiful landscape, the Molenveld also has a rich history. Traces have been found in the area dating back to prehistory, such as burial mounds and urn fields, which indicate early habitation of the area.

The area is popular with walkers, cyclists, horse riders and drone pilots. And one of those drone pilots noticed something special…
