FC Bayern are racing unstoppably through all competitions under Vincent Kompany and are not disturbed by a 3-0 half-time deficit at 1. FSV Mainz 05. With the impressive comeback, the already established champion collected a new entry in the book of records – another record is within reach. “We really cleaned our heads at half-time and showed why we are so strong this season,” said midfielder Leon Goretzka (31) after the final whistle on “Sky”, without wanting to go into details. “But you can imagine that the coach wasn’t entirely happy in the first half.”
In the 4-3 win against the Zero Fives, FCB scored their away goals 50 to 53, surpassing the previous record of 49 goals achieved in the 2021/22 season. Of course also from Bayern, led at the time by top clipper Robert Lewandowski, who moved to FC Barcelona for 45 million euros after that season. In 2019/20, Bayern scored 47 times in opposing stadiums and 46 times in 2013/14.
In the current season, Bayern collected an impressive 28 points with eight wins and four draws after falling behind – which they had 13 times. Only in the surprising 1:2 against FC Augsburg on matchday 19 were the Munich team unable to counterattack after the Fuggerstadt team was able to turn the game in their favor. SC Freiburg managed to get 19 points after being 21 behind.
Only Bayer Leverkusen was even more successful after deficits than Bayern in 1999/2000, when 17 deficits led to 30 points with eight wins and six draws. In the end it didn’t help because the first championship in the club’s history was lost in a heart-stopping final just because of the poorer goal difference on matchday 34 in Unterhaching.
A three-goal deficit has not been a problem for FC Bayern twice
Since the founding of the Bundesliga, a three-goal deficit has been overturned 49 times (two of which were even four goals). The games were even able to be completely filmed ten times. FCB has known how to do it since September 18, 1976, when a 4-0 win after 53 minutes wasn’t enough for VfL Bochum. Leverkusen also couldn’t save a 3-0 win against FC Bayern after just 18 minutes on May 21, 1988. Most recently, TSG Hoffenheim lost a 3-0 lead in the upper house, which was already given after twelve minutes against Werder Bremen. Julián Malatini and triple goalscorer Jens Stage settled the matter for SVW between the 21st and 49th minutes.
And setting another record is also possible for the Munich goal machine. If the remaining three matches against Heidenheim (H), Wolfsburg (A) and Cologne (H) end with three points, Bayern would have played the historically best Bundesliga season. Unsurprisingly, the record champion himself set the existing record: In the 2012/13 triple season, the club from Säbener Straße under veteran Jupp Heynckes scored 91 points with a goal difference of +80. They currently have 82 points and a goal difference of +80.
