The Netherlands will have to play the World Cup without Xavi Simons. The Tottenham striker suffered a serious knee injury and will be out for the rest of the season.
Simons was in the important 1-0 win for the “Spurs” in the relegation battle at the bottom of the table Wolverhampton Wanderers injured on Saturday, was left lying with his face contorted in pain and was finally taken off the field on a stretcher. According to media reports, he is said to have torn his cruciate ligament.
Simons announces World Cup exit: “None of this makes sense”
Simons spoke out in an emotional post on social media late Sunday evening. “They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way”the midfielder wrote on Instagram. “My season came to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it all. To be honest, I’m devastated. None of it makes sense. All I wanted was to fight for my team.” Now this opportunity has been taken away from him “together with the World Cup”. The dream is to represent your country in the USA, Mexico and Canada “now over” he added.
His loss is also a bitter setback for Tottenham: four game days before the end of the season, the “Spurs” are two points behind the safe bank. Simons has played 34 international matches so far (six goals) and was one of the great hopes in the “Oranjes” offensive for the World Cup, which begins on June 11th. The Netherlands will face Japan, Sweden and Tunisia in preliminary group F.
