Bitter news for Tottenham and the Netherlands: Xavi Simons (23) will miss the World Cup and probably a large part of the coming season. The offensive player confirmed via his social media channels that his World Cup dream had been shattered. According to media reports, Simons is said to have torn a cruciate ligament and will be out for months.
Simons, who moved from RB Leipzig to North London for 65 million euros last summer, was injured on Saturday in the first win of the year against bottom-placed Wolverhampton (1-0). After a challenge, the playmaker fell to the ground screaming and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher.
“They say life can be cruel and today feels the same. My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of this makes sense,” Simons wrote. “All I wanted was to fight for my team and now that opportunity has been taken away from me… along with the World Cup. The chance to represent my country this summer… just gone.”
Simons can no longer help Tottenham in the relegation battle
In addition to the World Cup tournament, Simons now has to watch whether Spurs manage to stay in the Premier League without him. The Lilywhites are 18th in the table. four game days before the end, two points behind the safe bank. Tottenham, for whom Simons contributed five goals and six assists in 41 appearances, last played in the second division in the 1977/78 season.
“It will take time for me to find peace with it, but I will continue to be the best teammate I can be. I have no doubt that we will win this fight together,” continued Simons. “I will now walk this path, guided by my faith, with strength, with perseverance, with confidence, as I count the days until I can stand on the pitch again. Bear with me.”
