SC DHfK Leipzig scored a surprising point in the relegation battle against record champions THW Kiel. The Saxons fought their way to a 28:28 (13:14) in front of 9,991 fans and although they remain at the bottom, they are only one point behind the third-to-last place. The best thrower was Staffan Peter (8).
Leipzig is fighting its way back after a false start
Leipzig gave the host a tough fight and was not impressed by the quick 2:6 deficit (9th). Although the Saxons made eight technical errors, the guests had strong support in their ranks with keeper Tomas Mrkva (seven saves in the first half). The underdog therefore remained within striking distance and went into the locker room with a 13:14 deficit.
Bombac briefly turns the game around – Peter scores to equalize
Even after the change, it remained a close game. As has often been the case this season, Kiel relied on the seventh field player. The hosts created good chances, but also conceded simple goals. The strong Peter missed Leipzig’s first lead with a missed seven-meter penalty at 24:24 (52nd). Bombac then achieved this with the score 25:24 (54th). Kiel took the lead again, but four seconds before the end Peter equalized to make it 28:28. The THW had another attack. According to video evidence, the Ostseestädter had one last chance to win with a free throw. However, Bilyk missed the goal and Leipzig celebrated the point like a victory.
