Gladbach coach in focus

Despite increasing criticism of himself, Eugen Polanski firmly believes that he will still be coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach next season. “I took on the job to keep Borussia in the league. I think we’re on the right track,” said the 40-year-old after the 0-0 draw in the Bundesliga with second-to-bottom VfL Wolfsburg.
After the draw, Gladbach enters the final spurt with a six-point lead over FC St. Pauli in the relegation spot. The team from Lower Rhine also has the better goal difference. Polanski, whose contract on the Lower Rhine runs until 2028, took over from Gerardo Seoane early in the season and took over the foals, initially on an interim basis, then permanently from mid-November and stabilizing them in the first half of the season. The team’s squad value has fallen by 3.2 percent since the ex-professional took office, with only Mainz 05 and Wolfsburg recording a larger decline during this period. In the second half of the season, Borussia showed many disappointing performances and only achieved two wins – the last one was in mid-March against FC St. Pauli, who were in danger of relegation.
There was a lot of criticism of Polanski, especially after the disappointing 1-1 draw against FSV Mainz 05 a week ago. Sports director Rouven Schröder had expressed his confidence in the coach at least until the end of the season. There will be a ruthless analysis in Gladbach in the summer. Polanski is confident that he will get through this unscathed. “I’m already self-confident enough to say that if I do my job, I’ll be a coach next year too,” he explained with a view to staying in the class.
