Timo Werner has once again underlined his strong form in Major League Soccer and single-handedly led the San Jose Earthquakes to their next victory.

The former national soccer player was involved in all of his team’s goals in the 3-2 (1-0) win at St. Louis City SC and secured the ninth win in the tenth game of the season with a brace in the second half.

After Werner had set up Preston Judd’s early 1-0 goal (8th), St. Louis turned the game around at the start of the second half thanks to an assist and a goal from German professional Marcel Hartel. But Werner brought San Jose back with a converted penalty (69th) and a strong direct shot (83rd). This was the third game in a row for the 30-year-old to score at least one goal.

“He is an experienced player. He has already played in World Cups. He has won the Champions League and played for big clubs in England and Germany. We are not surprised that he has adapted so quickly to Major League Soccer,” said coach Bruce Arena about Werner after the game: “There are more good things to come.”

“If we continue like this,” said Werner, “it could be a good season for us.”

In the Western Conference, San Jose is currently at the top of the table, just ahead of Thomas Müller’s Vancouver Whitecaps. The Canadians got their eighth win in the ninth game on Monday night thanks to a 3-1 (2-1) win against the Colorado Rapids, Müller managed an assist.
