A lot of noise in the warehouse on the Westelijke Randweg in Broek op Langedijk. Parents and children work hard together on the school floats. They must be ready in time for King’s Day. “The cart drives to Broek op Langedijk, to the Dorpsstraat. Then we will blow bubbles and wave to children. We will all do fun things,” the children say.
We have to keep this going
Broek op Langedijk has been celebrating the royal holiday for over 90 years with a parade with floats. A tradition that connects the village, says Chris Rijnders of the Oranje Activities Foundation. But for how long? “In recent years, the number of participants has been less, but the common opinion was that we should maintain this.”
That worked out quite well, Chris sees. “It is also a tradition that is passed on from generation to generation. I just spoke to some parents who rode on the cart themselves as a child and are now decorating the cart with their child.”
