HSG Blomberg-Lippe has made a successful start to the semi-final series of the women’s handball Bundesliga.

In the first game of the “best of three” series, HSG won 31:25 (13:10) on Saturday and still needs a win to make it to the final. The second semi-final duel with THC will take place next Sunday (May 3rd/7 p.m.) in Thuringia.

The HSG finished the preliminary round as league leaders after a second half without losing any points. It is the fifth meeting between the two teams in all competitions this season. A few weeks ago, Blomberg had already defeated THC in the game for third place at the Final Four of the DHB Cup (29:27) and also had the upper hand in the two Bundesliga duels with the Thuringians. Blomberg was only inferior in the Supercup comparison at the beginning.

HSG wins Three goal lead for break

At the beginning, the two teams met on equal terms, with Blomberg maintaining a narrow lead. With the score at 7:6 for the HSG, HSG keeper Melanie Veith parried a throw from Lotta Heider before Nieke Kühne (14th) scored on the other side to make it 8:6 for the hosts. Visiting coach Herbert Müller took the first time out and asked his players to “run like crazy” and prevent Kühne from throwing them as much as possible.

Johanna Reichert (18th) equalized for THC from the seven-meter line to make it 8:8, but Diana Dögg Magnusdottir (19th) and Maxi Mühlner (22nd) gave Blomberg a two-goal lead again (10:8), which Ona Vegue Pena (25th) extended to three goals with a seven-meter shot (12:9). At halftime the Lipperlanders were leading 13:10.

Blomberg ensures clear conditions

After the break, however, the THC collapsed, in the 40th minute Kühne (39th) scored to make it 20:13. Only after another break was the THC able to stabilize somewhat. Blomberg played confidently and kept the Thuringians at bay. In the meantime, the THC started a small race to catch up and got within four goals (22:18/46th), but then made mistakes again so that the HSG victory was no longer in danger.

The best thrower for Blomberg was Pena with eight goals, while Reichert scored seven for THC.
