The Kurpfälzer team took an early lead against 1. FC Schweinfurt 05, then gave up the game and had to live with a point in the end.
SV Waldhof Mannheim did not get beyond a 2-2 (1-0) draw against 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 on the 35th matchday of the 3rd league. For Mannheim it was the fifth league game in a row without a win (four draws, one defeat). Diego Michel gave the hosts the lead in the first minute of the game, Leonard Langhans equalized shortly after the break (50th), Devin Angleberger turned the game around (61st). Joker Felix Lohkemper scored the final score (73′).
Mannheim got off to a lightning start in the game. Terrence Boyd missed Vincent Thill’s cross from the right, but it reached Michel, who shot in unstoppable to take the lead. The guests first had to shake themselves up and then make changes early on: Kristian Böhnlein rushed into goal scorer Michel and was replaced by Manuel Wintzheimer in the eleventh minute.
Shortly afterwards, the Schweinfurt team complained about a handball by Samuel Abifade in the Mannheim penalty area, but referee Michael Näther allowed play to continue (15th). On the other hand, a free kick from Thill from 18 meters landed just over the goal (17th). As a result, a balanced encounter developed without any major highlights.
Schweinfurt harmless before the break
While Mannheim controlled the action, Schweinfurt tried to equalize. However, the bottom of the table lacked the means to build up great pressure. Waldhof had the better chances: Boyd threw himself into a cross and put his header just past the left post (30th). Three minutes later, Schweinfurt’s Johannes Geis took a free kick into the center, but Nico Grimbs missed.
Mannheim’s keeper Thijmen Nijhuis didn’t have to intervene – not even when Wintzheimer’s header went over the goal (41′). Shortly before the break there was another upset: Mannheim’s Tim Sechelmann used a deliberate handball to prevent two Schweinfurters from being able to move freely towards the goal. The central defender saw the yellow card and was well served (45th + 1).
Waldhof is suddenly running after a deficit
In the second half, Schweinfurt only needed five minutes to equalize. Lucas Zeller brought the ball sharply into the middle, where Langhans switched quickly and scored to make it 1-1. Now the speed was up: Abifade tested guest keeper Toni Stahl (53′), then Zeller forced Mannheim’s Nijhuis into a brilliant feat (56′).
Mannheim now intensified its offensive efforts again, but Boyd was no longer able to direct a Thill cross onto the goal (58th). Instead, the hosts lost order: Schweinfurt’s Erik Shuranov missed a cross, but Angleberger was in the right place at the far post and smashed the ball into the near corner.
Waldhof joker Lohkemper stings
Waldhof coach Luc Holtz reacted and brought in a second central striker in Lohkemper. That was to pay off: Boyd sent Lohkemper on his way, who maneuvered the ball past Stahl and placed it in the empty goal. Two minutes later it was almost a double blow, but Lovis Bierschenk found his match in steel. And the Schnüdel keeper was also there for Masca’s great long-range shot. At the ensuing corner, the visitors’ penalty area was ablaze, but several Mannheim players failed to get a decisive finish.
Mannheim tried everything in the final minutes to score the winning goal, but Schweinfurt defended passionately. Shuranov even had a chance to score the winning goal for the bottom of the table, but missed clearly (90+1). So it remained a draw until the final whistle. Mannheim is in tenth place with 49 points, Schweinfurt now has 20 points.
Next Saturday (May 2nd) Mannheim’s away game at 1. FC Saarbrücken is on the agenda (2 p.m.). At the same time, Schweinfurt welcomes TSV 1860 Munich for a Bavarian duel.
