The emergency shelter for single asylum seekers was announced last week by acting mayor Mark Verheijen. The town hall of Loosdrecht is largely empty because the municipality of Wijdemeren is merging with Hilversum.
The plan was to receive 110 asylum seekers from this week, for a period of up to six months. After the riots in recent days, the opening date has already been pushed back to May 6, and the number of simultaneous residents went from 110 to 70.
A demonstration by Defend Loosdrecht, a group that is part of anti-migration platform Defend Netherlands, has been announced later this evening. They have promised to continue protesting every day until the plans for emergency shelter are shelved.
