If you look over lakes or rivers on sunny days, you will see them everywhere: paddlers standing upright on their boards. What looks like pure leisure fun is, from a sports science perspective, a real health tip. Stand-up paddling (SUP) has developed from a niche sport into a popular sport phenomenon in recent years – and for good reasons.

1. Effective full body workout
SUP is a real powerhouse for the body. A study in BMC Sports Science shows that regular paddling brings measurable improvements in core strength and balance. Since the instability of the water has to be constantly compensated for, the deep muscles are constantly challenged. Even endurance benefits: the study showed significant increases in maximum oxygen uptake.

In contrast to windsurfing or sailing, the learning curve for SUP is extremely steep. If you have a calm lake and the right equipment, you can usually be safely on the board after half an hour. This low barrier to entry makes the sport exciting for all age groups. A few dry exercises for your paddling technique and the first tour can begin.

Transporting bulky hardboards used to be a real obstacle. Thanks to inflatable boards, this is a thing of the past. However, if you are looking for more performance, you should consider one Hardboard* ponder. Such a board is stiffer, faster and offers better gliding behavior on the water. However, a hardboard with prices starting at 800 euros is more expensive, more sensitive to impacts and requires a fixed transport solution on the car roof.
The golden rule for board size
The size is crucial so that beginners don’t have to swim involuntarily all the time. As a rule of thumb, the board should be about 30 centimeters longer than your height. For the necessary stability at the beginning, a width of at least 81 centimeters (32 inches) is recommended. Beginners benefit enormously from wider boards.
