Ex-Bundesliga goalkeeper Marwin Hitz is ending his career at the end of the season. The 38-year-old and his club FC Basel announced this. The former keeper from Borussia Dortmund, FC Augsburg and VfL Wolfsburg has been between the posts of the 21-time Swiss champions since 2022. His contract ends in the summer. The guest appearance at FC Lugano on May 17th will be his last appearance after 18 years in professional football.
Hitz had already announced in mid-January that he would be leaving FCB at the end of his working paper. At that time, however, he left it open whether he would continue his active career. Now his decision to call it quits has been made, “after many incredibly beautiful, educational, great and sometimes hard years.” “My biggest thanks go to my family: you motivated me, supported me and always accompanied me. Now it’s your turn. (At least until I get on your nerves…),” said Hitz.
The Swiss, who was twice in goal for the national team, added: “A huge thank you also to my parents: without your support, this dream come true would never have been possible. And of course I would also like to thank all my coaches, teammates, the clubs and their fans for the journey together. I was able to learn something new at each of my stops and take it with me for my future journey. Thank you in advance for everything that this sport has given me over the years.”
Hitz played 167 games for Basel – more than for any other club. He is followed by FCA with 157 games, where he also achieved his highest market value of 4.5 million euros, and BVB with 46 games. There were 19 for VfL Wolfsburg. He became German champion with the Wolves in 2009 and cup winner with Dortmund in 2021. He celebrated the double with Basel in 2025.
