Set photos fueled the rumors – but Sydney Sweeney is missing from the final cut. Screenwriter McKenna reveals what’s behind the speculation.
Was Sydney Sweeney removed from the second part of The Devil Wears Prada? During the filming of the sequel to the cult film, some photos went online. These showed a person in a hoodie who was supposed to be Sydney Sweeney.
Many people then wondered whether the actress should have a role in the second part. There are some new actors in the new film – including Justin Theroux, Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, BJ Novak and Lady Gaga.
What does the screenwriter say?
In a ScreenRant interview with Aline Brosh McKenna, the film’s screenwriter, she was asked whether Sweeney was actually on set. McKenna simply said, “There were a lot of photos from the set of different people. And then there were these memes that said, ‘So-and-so is in the movie. So-and-so is in the movie.’ It became a running joke about who people saw on set and who was in the film. That was one of the first signs that we had gotten people’s interest, because there was constantly… It was like this: At first people were really speculating, and then they were just messing around.”
In any case, Sydney Sweeney cannot be seen in the final cut of the film, which McKenna also confirms. It remains unclear whether she was there during filming and just wasn’t edited into it. However, in a previous interview, when asked if she would appear in The Devil Wears Prada 2, Sweeney said, “I don’t know what you guys are talking about.”
However, Aline Brosh McKenna’s statements do not completely rule out the possibility that Sweeney should have appeared in an earlier version of the film.
Possible role and reasons for the cut
According to Entertainment Weekly, it was previously rumored that Sydney Sweeney was set to play a client of Emily Blunt’s character Emily Charlton. It is uncertain whether this was actually planned.
It is also unclear why the actress was dropped from the sequel. Supposedly it was due to a creative decision. But her political beliefs may also have played a role: Sweeney has come out as a big Trump supporter in recent years and also attracted negative attention with a racist jeans advertisement. The cast of “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” on the other hand, had already spoken out against the Trump administration several times. Meryl Streep publicly criticized the president during his first term in office in 2017.
Sweeney will still be seen a lot on the screen in 2025
The film will be released in theaters on April 30, 2026. Sweeney will not appear in it. She has already made many other screen appearances this year. Among other things, she can be seen again as Cassie in HBO’s “Euphoria” – a new episode of the third season has been released every week since April 13th. She will also appear in the second part of “The Housemaid”.
