Cream released their third album, Wheels of Fire, on June 14, 1968. The album is one of the band’s best known. The rock trio – consisting of Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker – broke up 26 days after its release, and the members then pursued solo careers. The record was a huge success: it reached number 3 in the UK and number 1 in the United States and became the world’s first double album to achieve platinum status.

Now, almost 60 years later, a new edition of the album is being released – with numerous unreleased tracks, outtakes, alternative mixes, live recordings and newly restored versions.

Phase correction: sound without compromise

In addition, the recordings were corrected and the Haeco CSG effect, which was used in the original version in the 1960s, was reversed. This had “blurred” the stereo image of the old songs to make them compatible with mono record players.

The new deluxe versions will be released on June 12, 2026. The CDs and vinyls contain the tracks from the original album in the CSG-edited recording, which is now phase-corrected for greater detail and a clearer soundstage. Reference tapes from producer Felix Pappalardi are also included, providing significant insight into the creation of the studio tracks. The trove of recordings has been preserved since the 1960s and has now been released for publication.

Live rarities from the Fillmore and Winterland

Additionally, the edition includes eight tracks performed at the Fillmore Auditorium and Winterland Ballroom concerts in March 1968. These recordings have only appeared on “Live Cream” and “Live Cream Volume 2” (1972). The track “We’re Going Wrong” has never been released before.

5-CD super deluxe edition with hardcover booklet

The new edition of “Wheels of Fire” is released as a 5-CD super deluxe version. The CDs come in hardcover with notes by Jim Faber and photographs of the band from the 1960s.
