It seems like Robert Smith is just hearing Olivia Rodrigo’s new single “Drop Dead” for the first time today – even though he’s specifically mentioned on the synth-heavy track. “You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’ / And I know why he wrote them now that you’re standing right here,” sings the pop star in the first verse.

In a new interview for Apple Music 1’s New Music Daily with Zane Lowe, Rodrigo was asked about Smith’s reaction to the track – given these lines. “Oh my God. I don’t even know if I played it for him. He might be hearing it for the first time today,” she replied, visibly surprised. “I played him a lot of other songs from the album,” she added, referencing her upcoming album “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.”

Last summer, Smith joined Rodrigo on stage at their unforgettable Glastonbury set to sing a couple of the Cure’s ’80s hits – including “Friday I’m in Love” and “Just Like Heaven”. “I adore him and have had the opportunity to get to know him a little over the past year,” Rodrigo told Lowe.

Smith’s Sharpie action

She then described “one of her favorite memories” of the evening of the performance. “For the encore, I wore a T-shirt that said ‘You know all the words to “Just Like Heaven'” because I knew the song was coming out soon and I wanted to add a little Easter egg,” she said. “I went backstage for the quick parade and found out that Robert had written on the bottom of my shirt with a Sharpie, ‘Or do you?’ I thought, ‘Oh my God, he scribbled all over this shirt. There are 100,000 people out there. Am I really supposed to go out in this shirt that now says that?'” Rodrigo continued: “I was freaking out a little bit and then I thought: whatever, I’ll just wear it. Honestly, it’s like my favorite outfit I’ve ever worn.”

Smith hasn’t yet publicly commented on Drop Dead – but as a self-confessed fan and friend of Rodrigo, he’s probably excited. “She calls me quite often to talk about clothes and fashion – and we had a few unforgettable nights in the studio together,” he wrote for Rodrigo’s cover story in British Vogue. Smith added, “I can’t wait to hear what she does next!”
