After Tom Cruise has shot what is supposed to be the last “Mission: Impossible” film, the 63-year-old can now devote himself to further “Top Gun” projects. Paramount has confirmed that a second sequel to the 1986 hit is in the works – as a follow-up to 2022’s blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.” The film studio announced “Top Gun 3” at its CinemaCon panel this week, as “The Guardian” reported.

The newspaper reports that no other stars from the series have been hired for the new part so far, although producer Jerry Bruckheimer is on board. According to The Guardian, Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is not yet involved in the project.

“We presented Tom with a story that he liked,” Bruckheimer told People in 2024. “But he’s a very sought-after actor with a lot of films in the pipeline, so we’ll have to wait and see.” In the same interview, Bruckheimer said he admires Cruise because he is “really involved in every part of the process.”

Tom Cruise thinks out loud

Last year, Cruise told the Australian talk show “Today” that he was definitely considering a third “Top Gun” film. “Yes, we think and talk about a lot of different stories – what we could do, what would be possible,” he said. “It took me 35 years to develop Top Gun: Maverick, so we’re working on all of those things, we’re talking Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”

The actor added that he is working on “numerous more films.” “I’m always either shooting a film, preparing one or in post-production,” he said. In the same conversation, he also hinted at his upcoming role in Digger, the upcoming film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

With Top Gun: Maverick grossing $1.5 billion at the box office – a remarkable achievement in the streaming age – Paramount and its parent company Skydance are classifying a third installment in the franchise as an extremely important project, The Guardian reports. Skydance, which is merging Paramount with Warner Bros., plans to release “Top Gun 3” along with 30 other films a year – including an adaptation of the video game “Call of Duty” and a new horror film in the vein of “Longlegs.”
