Garrett Dutton, better known as G. Love, says he lost his Bitcoin savings to a scammer. “I had a really rough day today – I lost my retirement fund to a hack/fraud when I was switching my Ledger to my new computer and accidentally downloaded a malicious Ledger app from the Apple Store,” he wrote on social media over the weekend. “All my BTC gone in an instant.” He followed the post with a clear message to all doubters: “Fuck all yall haters that called me a liar,” he wrote.
The amount Dutton lost is shocking: 5.9 Bitcoin – “everything I had,” as he wrote. He saved for almost a decade. At the time of publication, this was equivalent to around $443,000. “Getting robbed is no fun,” he wrote.
“I’ve been in the crypto circus since 2017,” he wrote. “Today they caught me off guard. It was my own damn fault for not being more careful. But let it be a warning. There are so many scams out there.”
Authorities involved
In messages exchanged on Tuesday, Dutton told KuCoin – a crypto platform through which the thieves allegedly laundered the money – that he had informed authorities about the theft. KuCoin responded to Dutton on social media: “We have taken temporary security measures and frozen the suspicious account for 7 days.” Billboard reports that Apple has removed the fraudulent Ledger app from its service.
A spokesman for Dutton responded to the request from ROLLING STONE not at first.
“Everyone works hard to make ends meet and do what’s best for their family,” he wrote in another message, “and I believe it can all be gone in a moment if you let your guard down for just one second. That’s a tough road.”
Hits of the nineties
G. Love and Special Sauce, the band he has led since 1992, had a string of hits in the ’90s and early 2000s with songs like “Stepping Stones,” “Rodeo Clowns” and “Astronaut.” The group’s last album to date, “Ode to LR,” was released last year.
