Mercedes’ electric flagship is renewed in some small aesthetic details and shows off a revised range of engines, which allow it to reach up to 925 km of maximum autonomy

Alessandro Follis

April 14 – 09:07 – ALBUFEIRA (PORTUGAL)

No upheavals, but a substantial update that makes the EqsMercedes’ electric flagship, even more efficient and technological. If from an aesthetic point of view we find the familiar fluid and futuristic lines of the EQ family, under the skin the new Eqs hides updated engines and an 800 V platform that allows faster charging and greater autonomy. The rear-wheel drive 450+ version now reaches 925 km of travel in the combined cyclegetting ever closer to that thousand kilometer threshold that electric has been trying to reach for some time. Furthermore, later in the year the new EQS will also make its debut on the EQS steer-by-wirethe electronic steering mechanically disconnected from the wheels and connected only with a system of wiring and impulses: the response becomes much faster and the rotation required is reduced.

Familiar design

The aesthetic innovations on the new Eqs relate above all to the details: first of all the front grille, available in two different variants depending on the trim level chosen. The Electric Art Line features the traditional three-pointed star in an elevated position on the bonnet (and backlit in markets that allow it), while the grille itself features a motif of stars which are in turn illuminated and generate animations when the car is closed and opened. The AMG Line, on the other hand, features a much larger and more central logo on the grille. Other small innovations include the bonnet with new grooves and the rear lights with a longer propeller element. Furthermore, the Manufaktur customization program offers even more options to make the car unique and suited to your style. In terms of dimensions, the Eqs remains unchanged, with a length of 5,223 mmwidth of 1,926 mm, height of 1,512 mm and a wheelbase of 3,210 mm.

Up to 925 km of autonomy

The range of engines offered by the Eqs consists of four different options, two rear-wheel drive and two all-wheel drive. The range opens with the Eqs 400equipped with a 112 kWh battery and a single 367 HP (270 kW) and 505 Nm of torque, with a declared autonomy of 815 km and a maximum charging power of 330 kW. There Eqs 450+ it is the one that offers the maximum mileage: a single engine from 408 HP (300 kW) and 505 Nm of torque, 122 kWh battery and maximum autonomy of 925 kmwhile the charging power is 350 kW. There Eqs 500 4Matic all-wheel drive has a combined horsepower of 476 HP (350 kW) and 750 Nm of torque, with the 122 kWh battery and a maximum range of 875 km. Finally, the range is completed with the Eqs 580 4Maticalways all-wheel drive, from 585 HP (430 kW) and 800 Nm of torque. Here the battery is always the 122 kWh one and the charging power is 350 kW, while the autonomy is 875 km. The new 800V architecture allows for fast charging, gaining up to 320km in just 10 minutes at a charging station ultrafast. Furthermore, through an intelligent control system, charging is also possible at 400 V stations, with a divider that divides the battery into two parts and distributes the charging power in 175 kW for each. The rear engine is equipped with a two-speed gearbox, with the first providing maximum torque at low speeds and the second designed to maintain high power delivery at higher speeds.

Futuristic interior

The main novelty inside the Mercedes Eqs is the steer-by-wirewhich will go into production a few months after the car itself and will be available across the entire range. It is a steering system no longer connected mechanically to the front axle, but through a system of impulses transmitted by cable. The steering wheel thus becomes “butterfly” and with a maximum rotation much lower than a traditional one, allowing you to carry out any maneuver without taking your hands off. Agility thus becomes much superior, also thanks to the 10-degree steering rear wheels which allow for maneuvering spaces worthy of a small car. The system makes the car’s reactions much quicker with minimal movements of the steering wheel. The new Mercedes Eqs maintains its Hyperscreen inside, with three different screens including digital dashboard, infotainment and passenger display. Particularly impressive is the 17.7″ central one, already present on the previous model and which allows you to use various entertainment applications when the car is stationary. These same apps can be used by the front passenger on their screen with the car in motion, with a camera system that checks the driver’s gaze and hides the display from his gaze to avoid distractions. The navigator integrates Google Maps and can be viewed in 3D mode, which also includes pedestrians and cyclists. Furthermore, through the integration of artificial intelligence and data collected in the cloud, the system is able to calculate the variables that can most influence autonomy.
