Astronomical expectations accompany the SpaceX IPO: the valuation, narrative and the Musk factor are driving the hype. Experts also see this as the potential for a new meme stock.

• SpaceX combines key features of classic meme stocks
• High retail share could encourage extreme price movements
• Valuation is based heavily on future expectations

Along with a few other IPOs in 2026, SpaceX’s IPO is probably the brightest star in the stock market. According to media reports, the company is aiming for a $2 trillion valuation and is aiming for issue proceeds of around $75 billion. This would make Elon Musk’s space company by far the most spectacular IPO in history. But is the paper in danger of becoming the next meme stock?

Narrative-driven stock: Why SpaceX has meme potential

At first glance, SpaceX doesn’t seem to have much in common with meme stocks like GameStop or AMC. But if you believe in the words of Roundhill CEO Dave Mazza, SpaceX has three ingredients for a meme-like trade: “an impressive narrative, a founder with a loyal following, and a valuation that is likely based largely on future potential rather than fundamentals.”

University of Kansas finance professor Angel Tengulov explains via MarketWatch why SpaceX is a classic “narrative” stock. As a result, the space company is driven by enormous visions, such as the colonization of Mars. Such narratives are “perfect for the Internet” and are therefore particularly susceptible to speculative dynamics.

Studies have shown that meme stocks are driven by social dynamics, viral trends or short-term euphoria, as MarketWatch reports. GameStop and AMC have already impressively demonstrated how quickly such movements build up – and how quickly they level off again.

Price fluctuations inevitable? Small investors in focus

Whether SpaceX acts like a meme stock depends primarily on private investors. Accordingly, the unusually strong involvement of small investors could be crucial. According to Reuters, SpaceX wants to reserve up to 30 percent of the shares for retail investors – many times what is usual in classic IPOs.

This strategy dramatically increases the likelihood of price fluctuations, as Dave Mazza tells MarketWatch. Because it is small investors who often act on a short-term basis and are more receptive to trends, moods and social media dynamics. It is precisely this interaction that drives meme stocks and makes them so dangerous.

Another sticking point is likely to be the ambitious valuation: With up to two trillion dollars, SpaceX would immediately join the ranks of the most valuable companies in the world. According to MarketWatch, the valuation is already sometimes viewed as extreme because it implies a multiple of current sales. Such constellations are prone to disappointment – especially when expectations are not met.

Volatility as the norm?

A look at Tesla shares shows where the journey could be heading. There, too, a mixture of vision, strong CEO persona and high retail participation has been causing extreme price fluctuations for years.

A similar pattern could be emerging for SpaceX: strong price swings driven by expectations, narratives and market sentiment. One of the central questions after the IPO is likely to be whether the share will be supported by fundamental principles in the long term or whether it will be dominated by speculative euphoria in the short term.
