Deniz Undav and Nicolas Capaldo

podcast

As of: April 13, 2026 • 12:15 a.m

The 80th minute is underway in the game between VfB Stuttgart and Hamburger SV. With the score at 3-0, the game is basically already decided. Following a penalty area scene, there is an argument between Deniz Undav and Nicolas Capaldo. Both see yellow.

By Tobi Schäfer and Anne Hilt

So far, so normal in a football game in which both teams still have to achieve their goals for the season. For Undav, however, the warning means that he will miss the game against Bayern next weekend. He is also substituted a few minutes later – perhaps to protect him from being sent off.

Undav leaves the field without being directly involved in the goal because he shoots the penalty kick, which immediately followed the formation of the pack and was only recognized by the VAR, well over the goal. But he helped start the 1-0 and 2-0 scores. Nevertheless, the question remains: Does national coach Julian Nagelsmann feel confirmed at this moment that he doesn’t necessarily see the 18-goal man in his World Cup squad?

Undav or unnecessary? Has he National player overreacted?

The podcast hosts Tobi Schäfer and Anne Hilt discuss in the “Bundesliga Update” whether the VfB striker should have had a better grip on himself. Especially since the game was already decided at that point. Or are these emotions that even a national player has to let out? “That was the epitome of an unnecessary yellow card.”says Anne. At this moment Undav needs to have better control of himself and not waste the chance of a possible goal against Bayern.

“Still, it pays off for Undav because you can see that he has a lot of passion. At the moment he doesn’t think about the fact that he already has four yellow cards.”says Tobi. A player like Undav could be forgiven for this lapse.

Other Stuttgarters present themselves in World Cup form

Others scored the goals for VfB: Angelo Stiller, Chris Führich, Maximilian Mittelstädt and Bilal El Khannouss. Three of them, namely Stiller, Führich and Mittelstädt, have already worn the German national team jersey, but none of them were in Julian Nagelsmann’s original squad at the international break in March – in contrast to their teammates Alexander Nübel, Josha Vagnoman, Jamie Leweling and Deniz Undav.

Due to several cancellations due to injury, Führich and Stiller were nominated later. VfB could not only field an almost complete DFB team, but also present itself at Champions League level regardless of the pack formation.

Is Leverkusen putting pressure on you again?

Equal on points with RB Leipzig (1-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach), VfB moved into third place thanks to the better goal difference. However, Bayer Leverkusen has also announced its ambitions to fight for the coveted places. After the 1-0 win at Borussia Dortmund, the runner-up kept the gap at four points, but was able to overtake TSG Hoffenheim, who only played 2-2 at FC Augsburg.
