Leaked salary data from over 850 Microsoft employees shows large differences depending on level, bonus and stock bonus. Top salaries are hardly representative of the broader workforce. Anyone who works at Microsoft benefits significantly from additional components beyond their basic salary.

Data situation

An internal Microsoft document obtained by Business Insider contains information from around 850 employees in the US about their base salaries, bonuses and stock awards. This data was leaked and provides insights into how much compensation can vary depending on experience level or hierarchy level.

Income range

Salaries start at Level 59 with a base salary between approximately $120,800 and $124,000, with additional cash bonuses, percentage bonuses and stock awards. At the upper end, i.e. level 67, individual developers, including all components, achieve annual salaries of between around 500,000 and 600,000 US dollars. However, these peak values are only realistic for a small part of the workforce.

Importance of additional remuneration

In addition to the basic salary, cash bonuses, target/performance bonuses and, above all, stock bonuses play a crucial role. The share bonuses can vary greatly depending on the value of the company and ensure that the total income is in some cases significantly higher than the basic salary.

Why doesn’t everyone earn the same?

The data shows that not all of the tech giant’s developers earn equally well. Factors such as location, specific specialization such as cloud or AI, level or length of service have a strong influence on how much someone earns. In addition, the leaked information is not representative of all employees, especially since highly paid positions may be less likely to take part in such surveys.
