THEAND FREE WOMEN

Tuscany 1942. In a women’s psychiatric hospital the doctor Mario Tobino arrives in the countryside between Lucca and Viareggio, recently discharged after the North African campaign.
Here he tries to impose, among many difficulties, his own approach made above all of humanity, in a period in which psychiatry was still based on a certain oppressive rigidity. Mario Tobino was also a poet and precisely from his novel The free women of Magliano the miniseries is in six episodes.

What triggered profound reflections in the approach of Tobino (played by Lino Guanciale, now a fixed face of Rai fiction) is the arrival in hospital of a young woman committed by her husband; the doctor develops an attraction for the girl despite his sentimental bond with his ex-partner Paola Levi, who in the meantime has become a partisan courier.
“The free women of Magliano” by Mario Tobino (Mondadori)
The free women is a fiction in pure didactic style, where medical (the hospital series), period (the historical series) and the inevitable melody line mix in a product with a strong emotional impact and pedagogical value.
Tobino represented the pillar of a vision of the mental hospital as a place of treatment and Soavi’s direction dutifully pays homage to him.
For those who love biographical series on the “heroes” of our recent past.
