Among the participants of the five kilometers, mother Tara and daughter Annephine are laughing at the start, but the stakes are clear: they are also running against each other. “We’re having a competition: who’s going to win?” says Tara. The odds? “Fifty-fifty,” she says. “We have both trained hard.” There is a lot of competition: her daughter doubts whether her mother can beat her.
From young to old participate in the event, which is known as a sporting party in ‘t Gooi. Children run shorter distances, while others prepare for greater challenges. For many participants, a good cause is important. “I actually run with a donation every time. I think that is very important,” says runner Ben.
Mother beats daughter
Afterwards, the mother turns out to be the fastest of all women in the 5 kilometers. She responds with excitement: “I got it after all! I am very happy with my time.” With a cynical conclusion: “Good for the atmosphere at home.”
Her daughter finishes second, but remains undeterred. “It was too far for me,” says Annephine. “But I am happy with my second place. I would have caught her in the 1500 meters.”
A revenge seems inevitable. “I will definitely train, that is my goal.”
