FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) – The pilots of the German Lufthansa group have been called on strikes this Monday and Tuesday. The strike is planned from Monday 12:01 a.m. to Tuesday 11:59 p.m., as the Cockpit Association (VC) announced on Saturday. The VC members at Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Lufthansa Cargo AG, Lufthansa Cityline GmbH and Eurowings GmbH have been called on strike.

“The Cockpit Association is forced to take this step after the employer side shows no apparent willingness to find a solution in several collective bargaining disputes,” said VC President Andreas Pinheiro. “Despite a conscious decision not to take strike action over the Easter holidays, there were no serious offers. During this time there was neither a reaction nor a noticeable willingness to talk on the part of the employers.”

According to VC information, there is no offer of company pension provision at Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo, nor is there a viable offer for a new collective wage agreement at Lufthansa Cityline. At Eurowings, the company pension offer presented is unacceptable and is “at such a low level that it hardly deserves the name.”

Lufthansa reacted to the strike call with incomprehension. “Today’s strike announcement by the Cockpit union (VC) represents a completely new level of escalation,” said a company spokesman. Their core demand for doubling an already above-average and excellent company pension scheme is absurd and unfulfillable.

VC emphasized that they were still willing to talk. “The employers have the opportunity to avert the strike at any time by submitting negotiable offers,” explained Pinheiro. “A strike is always the last resort to bring movement into failed negotiations. We would have been happy to do without it – especially given the burden on our passengers and our colleagues on the ground. However, the responsibility for this lies with the employer,” said Pinheiro.

Given the current situation in the Middle East, Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cityline flights from Germany to the following destinations are exempt from the strike, according to the company: Azerbaijan, Egypt, Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Yemen, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates. At Eurowings, all flights that take off from German airports in the strike window are on strike./lig/DP/zb
