Teachers, police officers or administrative employees, these are the classic examples of civil servant jobs. But civil servant status is by no means limited to these fields. Specialists can also be employed in more unexpected areas such as wine monitoring or the German Weather Service.
Food inspector
Anyone who works as a food inspector not only checks cold chains and grease filters, but also contributes directly to public health. On behalf of districts or health authorities, these experts visit restaurants, butcher shops or school canteens – often unannounced. The job requires technical or scientific training, for example as a food technician or ecotrophologist. In many cases, the employment is in middle or higher service – including civil service. According to kununu, the average gross salary is around 46,700 euros per year.
Wine inspector
Wine inspectors work in the state service, especially in wine-producing federal states such as Rhineland-Palatinate or Baden-Württemberg. They check the origin, labeling and quality of wine products, often in laboratories, sometimes directly on site in wine cellars. The activity is sovereign and belongs to the senior or higher technical service. In Rhineland-Palatinate, according to job advertisements, this position is paid in salary group A 12, which corresponds to a salary of around 55,000 to 75,000 euros annually. The profession combines agricultural science knowledge with administrative skills, all under state protection.
Weather Service
Employees in the German Weather Service (DWD) or the geoinformation service Bundeswehr do more than just weather forecasts for the radio. They analyze air pressure, wind directions, radiation levels or climate values, often under time pressure and in safety-relevant contexts. Entry takes place via middle or upper service, depending on training or studies. According to planet-beruf.de, middle-level training takes around 20 months. The starting salary is around 2,150 to 2,600 euros gross per month – with a significant increase in salary over the years. The Bundeswehr also employs civil servant weather observers and meteorologists – with clearly defined career paths.
Forest officer
The forester as a civil servant is not a cliché, but a reality. In many federal states, the forestry service is organized by the state – and is therefore integrated into the civil service. Forestry officials ensure sustainable forest management, control timber harvesting, protect animal species and ensure fire protection. If you want to join the higher forestry service, you need a relevant university degree (e.g. forestry) and a traineeship. The salary here starts at A13 – around 4,000 euros gross and upwards. There is also close cooperation with ministries and environmental protection authorities.
Veterinary service
Veterinarians in the public veterinary sector inspect slaughterhouses, inspect animal transport or are deployed in cases of epidemics. Their tasks are sovereign, which is why they are often civil servants. Entry takes place via the higher service, usually after completing your studies and preparatory service. This position is particularly common in district offices or state investigation offices. The salary usually starts at A13, i.e. around 4,400 euros gross, with an increasing tendency depending on the level of experience.
