Ex-Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert has been charged with attempted murder, claiming the attack on William Yates was self-defense. All the facts about the case.

After Turnstile and guitarist Brady Ebert split in 2022, there was ongoing conflict between the musician and his former band. According to media reports, Ebert made allegations of sexual misconduct against singer Brendan Yates and drummer Franz Lyons.

On March 31, 2026, Brady Ebert was arrested. According to media reports, he is said to have hit William Yates, the father of Turnstile singer Brendan Yates, with a vehicle. The 79-year-old suffered serious injuries. Ebert was therefore charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault.

“I was literally attacked”

According to a report in the Baltimore Banner, Ebert said before a magistrate: “I’m sorry, but it was purely self-defense. I was literally attacked.” In addition, he stated that surveillance camera footage supported his account. Ebert described William Yates as the attacker and claimed that he threw a rock at his vehicle. According to reports, available video footage shows how Ebert hit the older man with his car. According to media reports, he said that the 79-year-old “deserved it”.

Turnstile released a written statement about the incident: “Last week, this violence escalated into an assault when Brady drove to Brendan’s parents’ home and struck Brendan’s father with his vehicle, causing him to sustain serious injuries. We are grateful that Mr. Yates survived and his surgery was successful, and hope for the best possible course of his recovery.”

The band is scheduled to perform at the Coachella festival on April 10, 2026 – their first appearance since the incident.

American Football frontman Mike Kinsella explained: “Brendan came into the studio to sing on a gang vocal call-and-response part that I wrote for the chorus of ‘No Feeling.’ […] As soon as he started singing, our jaws all dropped.”

Kinsella added: “His voice is so unique, and once he sang the part in ‘his’ key, it was clear that this part now belongs to him and him alone.”
