Surprising return: Amanda Bynes releases “Girlfriend” – an EDM rap track with Fenix Flexin – on April 10th. Here you can find out everything about the new single.
Former actress Amanda Bynes returns musically – and makes a surprising pop comeback. Her new single “Girlfriend” is scheduled to be released on April 10th. It is their first major release in several years.
Comeback with EDM and rap influences
Bynes described the sound of her new track to E! News as a mix of electronic dance music and hip-hop. “My inspiration was a lot of EDM, as well as rap,” she explained.
The song was created in collaboration with US rapper Fenix Flexin and is now being released on the “Create Music Group” label, which has already worked with artists such as Jason Derulo, Keri Hilson and Deadmau5. According to the label, the track combines melodic rap with EDM-inspired production and relies on a catchy, West Coast-influenced sound. The former Nickelodeon star had already teased the project in January and shared a sample on Instagram.
After around four years without a major musical release, “Girlfriend” marks a new start – and possibly the beginning of a new chapter in her career.
A comeback after years of reorientation
This path is not entirely new: Bynes released her first rap tracks together with her then fiancé in 2021. However, the songs largely remained under the radar and were perceived more as spontaneous excursions than as the start of a career.
With “Girlfriend” that seems to be changing. The professional collaboration and the clear stylistic direction indicate that she is pursuing her musical ambitions more specifically than before.
Between headlines and self-discovery
After her withdrawal from Hollywood in 2010, the actress increasingly found herself in the headlines due to personal crises. From 2012 onwards, several arrests followed, including for driving under the influence of alcohol and allegations of hit-and-run. At the same time, her behavior attracted attention on social media, where she attracted attention with sometimes confusing and provocative statements. In 2013, the situation reached a climax: after an incident in which she was said to have started a fire in a driveway, she was admitted to a psychiatric facility. Shortly thereafter, a guardianship was established that lasted almost ten years.
During this time, Amanda Bynes later spoke openly about her struggles with substance abuse, particularly prescription medications. Repeated hospital stays and legal conflicts dominated the reporting for years.
Her external appearance was also repeatedly discussed: drastic style changes, cosmetic procedures and visible changes made her a constant figure in tabloid media – often accompanied by speculative and voyeuristic reporting.
Since the end of her guardianship, she has been experimenting with various projects from fashion to art to podcasts and social media platforms. Music now seems to be the next logical step in this process. Whether “Girlfriend” is more than a one-off comeback signal remains to be seen.
