Zoh Amba’s first single will be released on Wednesday, April 8th: With “Another Time,” Amba (they/them) celebrates the debut of what will hopefully be a long music career.
From New York back to the roots
In the music scene, Amba initially established himself as a saxophonist in the New York free jazz scene. Her debut jazz album “O, Sun” was produced by John Zorn, among others. Now the paths lead back to guitar and singing – and back to the origins of Amba’s musical career in Amba’s hometown of Kingsport, Tennessee.
The sound spreads a melancholy atmosphere with hypnotic guitar sounds: a mixture of indie rock and alternative folk.
Missed opportunities and raw emotions
In the opening single, “Another Time,” Amba sings about missed love and everything that could have happened in another life. With a rough, growling, sometimes almost squeaky and crooked voice, Amba manages to touch the listener. The longing and barely concealed anger at the missed opportunities can be heard in the song.
Amba had to go through a lot herself and packs this into the sound of her songs. She experienced many difficult, destabilizing phases and developed compassion and understanding for many people – all of this can be heard in “Another Time”.
Well-rehearsed with close companions
The single was recorded in Asheville, not far from Amba’s hometown of Kingsport. Kevin Hyland, Amba’s best friend, plays electric guitar. Jim White is also there on drums – he has already sat on drums for Bonnie Prince Billy, Cat Power and Bill Callahan. Amba and he met many years ago on the streets of New York.
Touring with Courtney Barnett
In the summer, Amba will initially tour the USA with Courtney Barnett, a solo tour could follow. The single “Another Time” will be released on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
