A special penthouse is for sale on the West-Havendijk in Steenbergen. The apartment is located directly at the head of the harbor of the Steenbergse Vliet. Sellers Johan and his wife Elly enjoy living there. “You hardly hear anything here, but you see something happening all day long.”
That combination of peace and view was the main reason for the couple to live here, says Johan. “In the morning we read the newspaper here in peace and quiet and look out over the harbour. In the evening the lights come on and the image keeps changing. That remains special.”
Sun at any time of the day
The penthouse is spread over two floors and has large windows all around. This means there is sun at any time of the day, morning, afternoon and evening: “And if it gets too hot, you just sit somewhere else.”
The apartment has a living area of 218 square meters and includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms. According to Johan, visitors almost always react the same. “The first thing people say is: what a view. During the day it is very light here, in the evening it becomes cozy. You look out over the lively water, the boats and see the city slowly light up.”

On the water
The location in relation to the center was also the deciding factor. “You can walk into the center of Steenbergen within five minutes. You live here quietly on the water, but you can easily reach the shops and restaurants.” The couple previously lived in the old town hall in the center, but were ready for something new.
The penthouse includes several terraces, a private elevator and a large private jetty on the water. There is a large garage at water level. “It is about eighty square meters. You can moor here with a boat, unload your belongings and take the elevator up. We don’t have a boat ourselves, but many people find that attractive.”
Lack of a garden
Why are they selling the penthouse anyway? “That is progressive insight,” says Johan. “We noticed that we were going to miss the garden. We found another beautiful spot – also close to the center – with a garden.” The asking price for the spacious penthouse is 879,000 euros.
Johan already knows what they will miss most. “The view. The water during the day and the lights of the city in the evening. It sometimes feels like you are on the French Riviera, but in the Netherlands.”
