Eintracht Frankfurt ultimately had to settle for just one point against 1. FC Köln despite a temporary 2-0 lead. The frustration was correspondingly great after the 2-2 draw.
Jonathan Burkardt (66th) and Arnaud Kalimuendo (69th) put Eintracht Frankfurt on the supposed winning path with a double strike on Easter Sunday. 1. FC Köln responded with Jakub Kamiński (70th) and Alessio Castro-Montes (83rd). The SGE only got one point against the promoted team.
“The disappointment naturally comes from the fact that we are leading 2-0 and end up playing 2-2,” coach Albert Riera analyzed after the final whistle on “DAZN” and said: “But the biggest problem today was that our expectations are so high and the tension is so great.”
That was “something nice, but today I sensed more clearly than usual from the players that they are in a hurry and not calm enough. The word for it is fear. And if you play with this fear, you make mistakes. Mistakes. We have to get rid of the fear,” the Spaniard put his finger in the wound.
Riera said: “We have to get rid of the frustration and expectations of the last seven months in the last two or three months. This is not a criticism of the past, but the reality at the moment. We have to do better now. For me the most important thing is to get this fear out of the players.”
“It’s crazy, to be honest”
Eintracht Frankfurt ranks seventh in the Bundesliga with 39 points. Bayer Leverkusen is already ten points away in sixth.
“It’s crazy, to be honest,” said goal scorer Burkardt angrily at “DAZN” after the Cologne draw: “We lead 2-0 after the 70th minute and then get two more goals – completely deserved. We even have one or two more one-on-one situations against us in which we are lucky that Zetti holds up outstandingly.”
The attacker criticized: “I don’t know if we thought the game was already over. We completely lost our structure in the ten minutes after the 2-0 win. That’s so disappointing today because you’re leading 2-0 at home. That has to be three points.”
