Niko Springer surprisingly throws defending champion Michael van Gerwen out of the tournament at the German Darts Grand Prix. The German will now face the next world champion.
The 25-year-old Niko Springer caused one of the biggest surprises of the tournament on Sunday in Munich: In the second round he clearly defeated the Dutch superstar Michael van Gerwen with 6:1 legs and moved into the round of 16.
Springer dominated the game from the start and quickly took a 4-0 lead. Van Gerwen was able to shorten the score at times, but the German immediately regained control and confidently won the match.
The numbers also underline the clear superiority: Springer played an average of 98.34 points, while van Gerwen remained below his potential with 94.56. The German proved to be much more accurate, especially on doubles. “I got my chance and took advantage of it,” Springer said after the game.
In the round of 16, Springer will face the next world champion, Michael Smith. The German has had a positive record against the Englishman so far.
