The title defense was successful: PSV Eindhoven is once again Dutch champion. The timing of winning the title is special.
On Easter Sunday, PSV Eindhoven won the Dutch championship – more early than ever before for a club in the Eredivisie. PSV did not take the decisive step towards winning the title themselves. Their pursuers Feyenoord Rotterdam did not get beyond a 0-0 draw at FC Volendam and thus crowned Eindhoven as champions.
PSV had already won 4-3 against FC Utrecht on Saturday. The professionals around former Bayern professional Paul Wanner now experienced their title defense on the sofa – five match days before the end of the season. It is the club’s 27th championship title and the third in a row under former BVB coach Peter Bosz.
In doing so, PSV improved its own record for the earliest championship in the Dutch league. This had previously existed since April 8, 1978. However, the timing alone is a new record. AZ Alkmaar still holds the record for most match days left to win the title – the club secured the title in 1981 with seven games remaining.
After 29 matchdays, Eindhoven is 17 points ahead of Feyenoord this season. One point behind is NEC Nijmegen, the surprise team of the season. Record champions Ajax Amsterdam are only in fifth place shortly before the end of the season.
