Nieke Kuehne doing the jump throw

As of: April 4, 2026 • 9:18 p.m

In the women’s handball Bundesliga, HSG Blomberg-Lippe won the top game on the last main round matchday against Borussia Dortmund.

At home in Halle, the HSG defeated the previous leaders BVB with 33:31 (17:17) on Saturday evening. As a result, the Blomberger women pushed the guests out of first place in the table. With 36 points, one point ahead of Dortmund, HSG is in first place in the table.

As the first in the main round, HSG will now face Thüringer HC in the playoffs for the German championship, while BVB will play the semi-final series against HSG Bensheim/Auerbach.

The first place in the table after the main round could also be important for the playoff final: Blomberg-Lippe, who finished first in the main round, plays the first semi-final of the playoff tree – and the winner of the first semi-final would have home advantage in a possible third final game for the German championship.

Balanced game

Dortmund’s Alina Grijseels in action

In the hall on Ulmenallee in Blomberg, Alina Grijseels gave BVB the lead in the first minute of the game, after which a balanced game developed. In the middle of the first half, the hosts were able to pull away somewhat with a 3-0 run – mainly because of two saves by HSG goalkeeper Lara Lepschi, BVB remained without a goal of their own for around four minutes in this phase.

But Dortmund quickly caught up – after a 4-0 run, the guests led 11:10 in the 19th minute. It remained an equal duel and went into the half-time break with a draw.

And things continued evenly in the second half. There was no goal in the first three minutes after the break, then Guro Husebö made it 18:17 for Dortmund – but Nieke Kühne immediately equalized (34′).

Red card against Dortmund Alieke van Maurik

Dortmund’s Alieke van Maurik received a time penalty in the 41st minute for a tough defensive action against Kühne and was shown a red card.

When Dortmund, after a time penalty against Guro Nestaker, was outnumbered with an additional field player and failed because of HSG goalkeeper Nicole Roth (52nd), Ona Vegue managed to make it 28:26 for the hosts in the counterattack. But Dortmund was able to make up the two-goal deficit.

Exciting final phase

But Blomberg-Lippe stayed on the trigger: after a pass from Kempa, Kühne scored to make it 31:30 in the 56th minute.

In an exciting and competitive game, no goal was scored for three minutes. HSG goalkeeper Roth secured her team the lead. Then Kühne powered his way through the BVB defense and scored with a lob to make it 32:30. Dortmund shortened the score again through Kelly Vollebregt and increased the pressure, but Blomberg’s Diana Magnusdottir scored the 33:31 a few seconds before the end and thus set the celebrated final point.

The HSG team then celebrated with their fans. “Oh, how beautiful that is” sounded throughout the hall. The best scorers were HSG players Ona Vegue and Nieke Kühne with nine goals each.

Right to start in the European Cup

Both teams had already qualified for the playoffs for the German championship long before the last main round matchday. The Blomberg and Dortmund women each have home advantage in the semi-finals, which has also been certain for some time. In addition, after the Bundesliga main round, both teams have already secured the right to start in the EHF European League in the coming season.
