In the sixth game of the play-off quarter-final series, EHC Munich used its match point and defeated ERC Ingolstadt 7:3. The Munich ice hockey team will now face Adler Mannheim in the semi-finals.
EHC Munich was the third team to reach the semi-finals in the playoffs of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). The four-time champions used their first match puck in the sixth quarter-final game at ERC Ingolstadt with a 7:3 (1:2, 3:1, 3:0) and won the best-of-seven series 4:2. Adler Mannheim is now waiting for Munich in the semi-finals.
The 7:3 win is the final point in a high-scoring and hard-fought series that was evenly balanced for long stretches. This time, however, it was very fair and sportsmanlike, after the duel had gone well over the top at times – such as the brutal body check from Munich’s Fabio Wagner against Edwin Tropmann.
Munich more active team
Hirose opened the game after a big mistake by goalie Brochu, then the lead changed thanks to Krauss’ brace. As a result, the Munich team were the more active team, showed themselves hungry for goals and, after some strong long-range shots and an outstanding counterattack, went into the final third with a 4-3 lead.
Before that, however, the home team should have scored more goals than Ellis’ long-range shot; Sheen in particular had a huge opportunity to equalize. Instead, the EHC remained extremely secure defensively in the final period, Rieder’s solo and two goals into the empty goal by Smits and DeSousa marked the final point.
