Real Madrid botched the dress rehearsal for the Champions League duel with FC Bayern Munich. In LaLiga, the record champions lost 1:2 (0:1) at RCD Mallorca and were no closer to leaders FC Barcelona on matchday 30. The defending champions play at Atlético Madrid in the evening. The Royals await Bayern on Tuesday for the quarter-final first leg in the European premier class.
In a game with initially only a few chances on both sides, Manu Morlanes gave the hosts the lead in the 41st minute. Morlanes got the ball from Antonio Rüdiger after a cross and shot in from a few meters. Kylian Mbappé repeatedly drove the Real offensive forward, but the star ensemble was still rarely able to create compelling opportunities. Only Éder Militão (88th) equalized shortly before the end. But Vedat Muriqi (90.+1) scored in added time to win for the team coached by Martín Demicheli, who scored three important points to stay in the league.
Real coach Álvaro Arbeloa then stood in front of his team. “The defeat is on me. It’s 1000 percent my fault,” he said: “Today we didn’t implement what we’ve been training for all week. We didn’t create any good chances to score, we lacked patience, energy and ideas.”
