The top game in the 2nd Bundesliga between Dynamo Dresden and Hertha BSC had to be interrupted several times in the early stages. Then the situation escalates.

What had happened? After a loud bang in the Hertha fans’ block, numerous masked Dresden supporters suddenly stood in front of the guest block and wanted to storm it. The SGD supporters shot pyrotechnics into the block and the away fans also fired back.

The police then arrived with several emergency services and chased the Dresden fans across the field back into the block. Dynamo captain Stefan Kutschke made his way to the block to say a few words of encouragement to the supporters, but had to turn around without having achieved anything. Over 100 police officers then formed a large chain on the field to prevent further incidents, but withdrew after almost 20 minutes.

According to Dresden’s sports director, Sören Gonther, it is supposed to be a small stolen flag, but he cannot confirm anything 100 percent. Dynamo’s CFO Stephan Zimmermann said at halftime on Sky that the incidents would be dealt with objectively by the police. “We will punish everyone involved severely,” he announced. Gonther did not want to judge whether the police had intervened too late. “But they were still there on time with a lot of presence.”

Hertha’s managing director Peter Görlich made it clear that such riots were “grist to the mill of big critics” when talking about new stadium ban guidelines. However, one should not make the mistake of generalizing everything. He is still in favor of a lively fan culture, “but as soon as violence is involved or people are being shot at with pyrotechnics, it stops for me,” he said on Sky.

Sky reporter Nele Ocik spoke of “scary scenes”. The game had to be interrupted for several minutes at the beginning due to Pryone fog.
