Weiser takes issue with Bremen’s “questionable” transfer policy

Werder professional Mitchell Weiser publicly criticized his club’s sporting decisions during the game against RB Leipzig. Managing director Clemens Fritz announces consequences.
During the half-time break in the 1:2 against RB Leipzig, Werder professional Mitchell Weiser publicly criticized his club. In an interview with Sky broadcaster, the defender criticized last summer’s transfer decisions – and thereby exposed managing director Clemens Fritz.
Weiser said at Sky: “It’s true that a lot of things happened last summer that were questionable for me. With all due respect: We were on a huge path until last year and then got ourselves into a difficult situation this year.”
Under former coach Ole Werner, Bremen narrowly missed out on the European Cup twice. Now the club is fighting against relegation. There were players gone who would now be mourned. These departures were “a bit careless”. Weiser expressly did not want to criticize the current coach Daniel Thioune. He is waiting for signals that the club is going back in the same direction as under Ole Werner.
Weiser added: “We now have to somehow manage to work through that and improve it for next year. The whole club was actually striving for something different than where we are now. That’s where I personally want to go and I hope that we can somehow shape it together.” After the defeat on Saturday, the lead over relegation place 16 is only four points. Since FC St. Pauli only plays on Sunday, this could even shrink to one point.
The statements come from professional football director Fritz in an already tense situation. The club and Fritz have been accused of misconduct in transfer policy for months. After the game, Fritz said he only heard “fragments” of the interview. He announced: “We will of course work through this internally. I sat with him a few weeks ago. A good, very open and honest conversation with him. For me it’s a bit incomprehensible, these statements that he has now made.”
Weiser tore his cruciate ligament last summer and has been out ever since. His contract expires in the summer. There have already been discussions about an extension. Weiser confirmed: “I feel very comfortable.”
