Liverpool FC wanted to make it to the cup semi-finals perfect against Manchester City. But the top duel with the “Skyblues” turned into a debacle.

Liverpool FC suffered a terrible cup defeat. The “Reds” lost 0:4 (0:2) to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Easter Saturday and thus have to bury their dream of the title. For coach Arne Slot’s team, only a triumph in the Champions League can save the season. Liverpool will face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-final first leg next Wednesday.

Erling Haaland decided the game at the Ethiad Stadium almost single-handedly. The ex-Dortmunder scored twice before the break (39th minute/foul penalty, 45th+2) and scored a hat-trick in the second half (56th). In the meantime, Antoine Semenyo also got on the scorers list (49th). Liverpool missed the chance to make a cosmetic result from the penalty spot. Mohamed Salah was denied by City goalkeeper James Trafford (64′). After City’s fourth goal, Liverpool fans left the stadium in rows.

City now has the chance to win the second cup competition in England after the League Cup. The championship title is theoretically still possible for Pep Guardiola’s team. The gap to leaders Arsenal is currently nine points. However, City still have a game in hand. In mid-April, the second-place team will play away at the “Gunners”.

Manchester City – Liverpool FC 4:0 (2:0)

90th minute: Michael Oliver sees it and blows the whistle punctually after 90 minutes. City is in the semi-finals after a gala performance. Liverpool is out.

88th minute: Konaté and Nico also see the yellow card.

85th minute: Liverpool keep trying, but the home team’s defensive bulwark stands. There is no getting through.

81st minute: This is City’s eighth semi-final in the FA Cup in a row.

77th minute: Slot changes Chiesa for the unfortunate Salah. The former Frankfurt professional Marmoush comes to City. Three-packer Haaland leaves the pitch for him.

75th minute: The game is coming to an end. City manages the comfortable lead. Liverpool are struggling, but are no longer creating much danger.

71st minute: City now have Foden and Reijnders replacing Semenyo and Cherki.

70th minute: The City supporters target Liverpool coach Arne Slot. “You’re getting sacked in the morning” echoes through Ethiad Stadium. The Dutchman is coming under more and more pressure.

68th minute: Gravenberch, Wirtz and Ekitiké leave the field for Liverpool. Mac Allister, Ngumoha and Gakpo are now in the game.

67th minute: Kerkez and Bernardo Silva have now also seen yellow cards.

64th minute: It’s just not meant to be. Salah misses and thus misses the opportunity for cosmetic results. The Egyptian puts the ball flat to the right. But the ball is not particularly placed. Trafford sensed the corner and deflected the ball to the side.
