It’s hard to imagine, but these pigs will weigh 150 kilos in just under a year. What you may not want to imagine is that after a year of hard work, these weed killers are on the plates of Drenthe in the Ekehaar region during dinner.
But the special thing about these animals, which do their work at the ice rink in Ekehaar, is that they connect the residents of the village. The pigs are cared for by twenty assistant farmers, managed by the Village Pigs working group. “The pigs are also a social thing,” says Sasha from the working group. “It connects us as volunteers and we want to celebrate that every now and then.”
The residents of Ekehaar and surrounding areas celebrate this at the Zwienesezen, which are planned in June and September. “We’re going to celebrate here next to the piggies, so you can see each other again,” says Sasha.
