The most striking case is that of Nicolò Tresoldi2004, very Italian striker and cornerstone of the Germany U21 team. The story in brief: born in Cagliari and raised in Gubbio, at the age of 13 he moved to Hannover where he remained until last summer, when Brugge paid eight million plus bonuses to bring him to Belgium. So far the gamble has been successful: 17 goals in the league and cups, three in the Champions League where the one at Camp Nou against Barcelona stands out. In all of this, Italy stood by and watched. Tresoldi told the Gazzetta: “Years ago I made the decision to play for Germany. They showed me a path, I immediately felt loved, even by the federation. It’s important for a player. I’ve never received calls from Coverciano, so for now I’m going ahead with Germany. What if I was expecting at least one phone call? Yes…”. Spoiler: it never arrived.
