The whole world that we think of as virtual actually has a profound impact on material reality, on every aspect of our daily lives. Starting, as every reader personally experiences every day, with the prices of things, including food, and the environmental impact, which will affect our lives more than we think. To give just one number: in the last year humanity has moved and moved materials equal to the weight we moved from the beginning until 2000. And all this in just one year, despite the wars. It’s a world that is exploding in our hands. I learned these and other interesting things in the book by Francesco Vecchi, The weight of the earthpublished by Piemme.

Francesco is the face of Morning 5: a polite and profound journalist, idol of mothers who watch morning TV and see in him an ideal son, or better yet a boyfriend of their daughters.
However the book is not very reassuring; This is why it should be read, to better understand and study some remedies.

In the last chapter, Vecchi talks about our grandmothers, who with the motto “he who spends more spends less” had an approach more suited to what we have today, driven by the desire to consume, both physical and digital goods (which are in any case not immaterial goods, but extremely material ones).

Today, to save ourselves, we must go back to making quality purchases, buying fewer things that can last over time. “Durability” is the only key to exiting an environmental and also political and economic crisis. And this key – it is one of the theses of the book – is above all in the hands of women.
