Toilet bowls, trampolines, pieces of plastic, chunks of concrete and large mountains of scrap metal: the business premises of Willem and Erin Brink in Nieuw-Dordrecht are littered with waste. The landlords are literally left with the rubble of the bankruptcy of B&B Afval Recycling.

In recent years, the couple rented their site to the company that sorted and recycled waste types. At the beginning of March, the waste processor in Nieuw-Dordrecht was declared bankrupt and work has been at a standstill since then.

“This came as a surprise,” says Erin Brink. “The company has been located on our site since 2018 and that has always gone well. However, we have had to deal with rent arrears in recent months and that is still there. But that payment arrears are actually peanuts compared to what has been left behind on the site.”

Curator Paul van Boven is also busy with this case. “We are currently working to reduce the waste mountain on the site,” he says. “The landlord of the site, among others, is doing a lot of work for this in consultation with the municipality.” The curator has not disclosed anything about the cause of the bankruptcy, which he says is still being investigated.

The municipality of Emmen also confirms that it is aware of the problems with the mountains of waste that need to be removed. “The municipality has a role in this, regarding supervision and enforcement. We have taken on that role. An attempt is being made to find a solution in consultation with parties,” writes a spokesperson for the municipality of Emmen.
