Moudar and Hestia

During the previous edition of Spaarnediners, asylum seeker’s center resident Moudar and volunteer Hestia came into contact with each other. Thanks to Hestia, Moudar is allowed to play in the band during dinner, on his drum. Last week they went shopping together, so that Moudar appears fresh on stage. “He also received all my sons’ clothes.” Moudar does not speak Dutch yet, nor does English. “We talk via Google Translate, which actually goes very well. He calls me his substitute mother.”

Hestia has been involved in the Spaarnediners project from the start and sees that more and more volunteers are joining. “I was active as a volunteer at the hockey club for years, but we were constantly short of volunteers. A lot of people volunteered to help with this project, which is fantastic to see.” About fifty volunteers wearing orange aprons hand out food, pour drinks and wash dishes.

Every edition, Spaarnediners invites a different asylum seeker center to dine. Last edition there were mothers with children, this time it was mainly single men. Everyone is excited, and even before dessert some of them are dancing.
