Will Jogi Löw take over a World Cup participant?

Ghana wants to sign former national coach Joachim Löw for the World Cup and is close to an agreement – at least one portal writes. But how realistic is that?
Former national coach Joachim Löw is reportedly close to signing a contract with the Ghanaian national team. At least that’s what the portal “ghanasoccernet” reports. Accordingly, the contract should relate exclusively to the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. According to the report, an official confirmation is expected in the coming days.
The portal refers to “several sources”, but does not name them. Whether Löw will actually look after the “Black Stars” remains an open question. Especially since “Bild” now reports that there is no contact between the world champion coach and the Ghanaian association, so Löw’s involvement is unlikely.
What also speaks against an imminent agreement with Löw: Ex-Bundesliga coach Winfried Schäfer, technical director of the Ghanaian association, reacted with surprise when asked by the dpa news agency. He has no knowledge of an impending deal with his compatriot Löw. The search for a coach does not fall within Schäfer’s area of responsibility, but rather that of President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku.
The fact is: Ghana is looking for a successor to Otto Addo. The former Bundesliga professional was relieved of his duties as national coach just a few hours after the 2-1 defeat against the German national team last Monday. Addo had coached the team for two years. He had already looked after the team as an interim coach in 2022 and was also responsible at the World Cup in Qatar when Ghana was eliminated in the group phase. At the upcoming finals they will face England, Croatia and Panama in the group stage.
But it is also a fact: Löw had already said around two years ago that this World Cup would now be extremely exciting for him. At that time he said in an interview with Welt.TV that he was ruling out a job as a club coach. But: “What is also a goal for me is the 2026 World Cup, America, Canada, Mexico. I would find that exciting,” said Löw.
He recently confirmed on the pay-TV channel Sky that he would like to take over a national team again: “Basically, I said that I don’t want to say goodbye to retirement now. Especially when there is another interesting offer and a good perspective,” said the 66-year-old. If he takes another job, he assumes it will be with a national team. “As far as my experience goes, that would be best for me too.”
