A member of the CDA in the municipality of Westerveld was threatened during the election campaign. This was said by party leader Gerjo Ballast during a debate in which the election results were discussed.
The incident happened during a flyer moment in one of the villages. After consultation with the council chairman and the mayor, a report was filed. According to Ballast, threatening council members will not be tolerated.
“While distributing flyers, one of our members was threatened. And we discussed this with the mayor and council chairman,” said Ballast. He indicated that the party consciously shared the incident. “I wanted to mention it during the interpretation debate, because I want to show colleagues: go to the mayor if something like this happens and have a conversation.”
He could not say anything about the seriousness of the situation. “I will not go into detail about what exactly happened. That needs to be investigated. We considered it so serious that a report has been filed.”
According to Ballast, the incident was unexpected. “It was very unexpected and un-Westerveld. We have never experienced this before.”
Finally, he emphasized: “Many good things have happened during the election period, but we cannot tolerate councilors being threatened.”
