Olympic gold, Slalom World Cup, overall World Cup: Mikaela Shiffrin has won several medals and trophies in the past few months. However, one is broken.
It’s been a week since Mikaela Shiffrin secured the crystal balls in the Slalom World Cup and the Overall World Cup. The two titles made her happy. “It’s very emotional,” said the 31-year-old American after her success. She already proved that she can celebrate triumphs after her Olympic gold in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
But this week she proved that she can also party too wildly. On her social media profiles on X and Instagram, Shiffrin posted a picture of her Olympic gold medal, a healthy crystal ball – and a broken one. “Oops,” she wrote. “Unfortunately not an April Fool’s joke.”

When a follower asked how that happened, Shiffrin wrote on X: “I opened a champagne bottle and the cork hit the ball and the trophy fell off the table.” The cup broke into two pieces.
Apparently it’s not the first time that a trophy has been broken at Shiffrin. At least compatriot and teammate Paula Maltzan commented on Instagram: “Not again.”
