The German Ski Association is looking for trainers after the end of the 2025/26 biathlon season. TV expert Michael Rösch once again brought several options into play. From his point of view, one candidate in particular is promising.
Former biathlete Michael Rösch has several candidates in mind when it comes to filling the vacant coaching position at the German Ski Association (DSV). After the season finale in Oslo, the DSV announced the separation from the two women’s coaches Kristian Mehringer and Sverre Olsbu Röiseland.
Rösch emphasized in an interview with “Eurosport.de”: “The market is full, it is often the case after an Olympic cycle that the coaching carousel turns.”
His candidates that he would see at DSV: “I had already brought Andreas Birnbacher, who currently looks after the B squad, into play and could also imagine a constellation with Armin Auchentaller, who has also worked with the new sports director Bernd Eisenbichler at the USA.” The 42-year-old also mentions Sandra Flunger, who was most recently employed by Switzerland.
Rösch: German biathletes will soon need “certainty”
The option with Andreas Birnbacher in particular would “make sense because he has already worked with many younger athletes,” the TV expert adds: “That would be a German variant, but perhaps there is also a completely different option.” Getting input from outside would also be “interesting”,
In the end, what is most important is that the new biathlon sports director Bernd Eisenbichler, who succeeds Felix Bitterling, who is moving to the IBU World Association, finds a solution in the next few weeks. “It would of course be good for the athletes to have certainty at some point,” said Rösch. The period in which “as an athlete you want to know what a phase is” begins in May at the latest.
