Carice van Houten has not been seen on television for a while, but she used to sit at the table with Matthijs van Nieuwkerk in DWDD. How did she experience that? “I was on pills.”

It was legendary television: all those years that Matthijs van Nieuwkerk was on TV with De Wereld Draait Door. We hardly see many of the people who used to sit there at the table anymore. Carice van Houten was one of them. She regularly joined, while now she never does that at, for example, Pauw & De Wit or RTL Tonight.

Beta blocker

Carice indicates that she is actually too sensitive to the nerves that TV brings. “I once, when I was a young boy at Barend & Van Dorp, emptied an entire container of dirty nuts – which had probably been on the table for three years – out of sheer nerves,” she says in the LINDA.

Those nerves never went away. “I could only watch a broadcast of De Wereld Draait Door if I had taken a beta blocker beforehand. I still hate those kinds of performances.”

In the spotlight

Isn’t Carice very used to being in the spotlight? “Sure, but it is something else to sit down somewhere and express your own opinion. When I play a role, I can still hide behind a character in some way.”

Now she is making strides as a presenter. She will present the elimination race A Beautiful Mess. Can she handle that emotionally? No. “The first time someone was sent home, I cried about it myself. So professional, haha.”
